Friday night my big brother and me

jump in his beat up VW rabbit -

knapsacks in back,

a case of beer secure in the trunk.

If you start me up

If you start me up, I'll never stop

Nineteen and sixteen, we don’t hang out

so much, driving to the cottage,

no parents, no rules, hoping to

catch our friends party tonight.

I’m jumping jack flash its a gas gas gas

four hours later with one still to go, punchy

and sleepy, he cranks up the volume,

I roll down our windows,

we belt out the lyrics heading down 41

Laughter, joy, and loneliness and sex and sex and sex and sex

And look at me, I'm in tatters

I'm a shattered

Shattered!!

2 am starry sky, arrive at the river,

friend's cottage now dark, we head to our place

unload the car, load up the fridge

he cracks open a beer, then tosses me one.

NaPoWriMo Prompt: This prompt plays around with song lyrics, but in a very specific context – singing while riding in a car. Take a look at Ellen Bass’s poem, “You’re the Top.” Now, craft your own poem that recounts an experience of driving/riding and singing, incorporating a song lyric.
